Alakol lake is on the way to one of the most favorite track from Karakol to Altyn-Arashan at the altitude of 3532 meters above sea level. Usually, in the summer, this place is the first overnight stop on the road from Altyn-Arashan in Jeti Oghuz. . Although this route is considered as one of the most popular, it is not the easiest one. The lake is located in a desert valley surrounded by cliffs and peaks of Terskey Ala Too, leading to a rocky trail and rocky scree. The length of the lake is 2.3 km long, 700 meters wide, which makes this lake the largest lake among 729 lake Issyk-Kul basin. The depth of the lake is unknown, it is not mentioned in any guides, however, we know about its water volume from the encyclopedia of Kyrgyzstan : 4.3 million cubic meters. The lake is supplied by glacial streams which forms waterfalls. The lake is frozen from October to May. The color of the lake changes depending on the time of day, season and weather: from purple, to dark blue, or even pink.
