The Issyk-Ata Gorge is located 85 km from Bishkek, driving through the Krasnaya Rechka village ( Bishkek – Balykchi highway). Last years people started going in this place through the Gornaya Maevka village, because it makes the road shorter by 20 km and countryside is more picturesque, although the asphalted road needs some repairs.
The gorge is very popular because of the resort (located at an altitude of 1,860 m above the sea level) that was built in 1957 on hot mineral springs of hydrogen sulphide water. This water is used for medical and recreational purposes, as well as for household consumption and heating. The hot water has positive impact musculoskeletal system, internal organs, and neurological diseases. One can get entrance ticket to the resort for treatment from the Ministry of Health. The treatment stay should be prescribed by doctors. Near to the resort, you can find 2 relatively inexpensive pools with hot hydrogen sulfide water open to all visitors. There is also visit a more expensive private pool. There are 3 houses not far from the resort that you can easily rent for a reasonable price.
You can get here from Bishkek by a municipal bus leaving from the eastern bus station. The Issyk-Ata Gorge is generally very attractive for tourists and very picturesque. The shore´s of stormy river is The covered with forests of archa trees, mountain ashes, and various bushes. All streams flowing into the river have their own waterfall. The very first 8 m high waterfall (2,100 m above the sea level) is located close to the resort (2.4 km) and is intensively visited by tourists, patients, and guests of the resort. In the middle of the gorge, at a distance of 7.5 km from the resort, there is Batyi Mount (Botvey) at 3,800 meters high. At the mountain, Issyk-Ata River takes in the east stream of Batyi and becomes twice as bigger and stronger. Batyi Gorge is treeless and picturesque, but is not popular among tourists because this place rapidly ends in steep descent from the ridge next to Kok-Moinok Gorge. The Issyk-Ata Gorge goes further to the south, and Although it is also treeless, but very picturesque and diverse. There are several lakes there, behind which you can see the glaciers. Along each of them you can take a path to the neighboring Alamedin Gorge. The main gorge continues further to the south and ends with glaciers with a non-official pass to Eastern Karakol behind the Kirghiz Ridge. Herdsmen have been herding their cattle in the pass of Suusamyr in since long years ago.
